Choreographer

Hofesh Shechter( OBE) is a British choreographer, composer, and filmmaker. In 2016, Shechter created Clowns, his first work for NDT.

He is the founder and artistic director of UK based Hofesh Shechter Company, co-director of the L’Agora - Cité internationale de la Danse, Montpellier, associate artist of Sadler’s Wells and artist-in residence of Gauthier Dance (2021-2026).

Shechter is recognised as one of the most exciting artists making work for both stage and film and renowned for composing atmospheric musical scores to complement the unique physicality of his movement style.

His works have been staged around the world, by companies like Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Nederlands Dans Theater, and Paris Opera Ballet. In addition, he has choreographed for theatre, television, and opera.

Shechter’s has been awarded with numerous prizes, including the British Theatre Institute’s Award for Excellence in International Dance (2011), Best Dance Film at Festival de Cannes (2023); a Tony Nomination for his work on Fiddler on the Roof (2016), nominations for an Olivier Awards for Best New Dance Production for Grand Finale (2018) and Theatre of Dreams (2025) with Best Theatre Choreographer for Oedipus (2025). In 2026 he was also awarded a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.

In 2016, Shechter created his first work for NDT: Clowns. Later VLADIMIR (2018) and From England with Love (2021) followed. In season 2026-2027, Shechter returns to NDT for a world premiere, as part of the NDT 1 programme Out of the stillness.
